Francesca Stavrakopoulou, Sheffield and Child Sacrifice

Francesca Stavrakopoulou, presenter of the much discussed BBC2 series, “Bible’s Buried Secrets”, is coming to the world famous centre of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament minimalism to talk on child sacrifice and the Bible.

Before her life as a TV celebrity, Stavrakopoulou wrote, among other things, King Manasseh and Child Sacrifice: Biblical Distortions of Historical Realities (de Gruyter, 2004) and Land of Our Fathers: The Roles of Ancestor Veneration in Biblical Land Claims (T&T Clark, 2010) . She is currently Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter.

The talk will be held at 6.30pm, Wednesday 4 May 2011, in the Jessop West Exhibition Space, University of Sheffield. There will be time for questions (though hopefully a little less of the ‘outside the box’ reactions to her programme that have become a little too common…)

All welcome

And more details to follow…

  1. Many people are familiar with Abraham’s [aborted] sacrifice of Isaac, but few think of the fact that he sent his son via Hagar (Ishmael) out to die with his mother in the wilderness – again aborted by divine intervention (unfortunately).
